Helpful Hints
1. Keep your wrist firm when playing the ball. If you wave your wrist around you will lose a lot of control and you will not hit the ball as hard.
2. Keep your racquet head up and your wrist cocked. You will not be able to use your wrist as much, you will be able to hit the ball harder and you will be able to control the ball more when you have your racquet head up. It will also help you disguise your shots more. (A boxer will always keep his hands up and is always ready).
3. When serving and lobbing the squash ball should always hit the side wall and then the floor, after first hitting the front wall. This will help stop the ball from coming off the back wall and make it difficult for your opponent to volley the ball.
4. When driving, cross-courting, boasting (attacking boast) and dropping the ball should always hit the floor and then the side wall, after hitting the front wall. This will help stop the ball from shooting off the side wall and make it difficult for your opponent to take the ball from the middle of the court.
5. If you wish to hit the ball to the back of the court and you are in the front of the court then you must hit the ball a little lower (unless you are playing a lob) however, if you are at the back of the court then you must hit the ball a little higher. This rule must only be used when hitting the ball at a reasonable pace.
If you find that the ball is not always going where you want it to go then here are a few things that you might be doing wrong1. If the ball is always going cross-court when you are trying to hit the ball straight then you are hitting it too early. Try to hit the ball a little later and in line with your front foot. Ensure that your feet and shoulders are parallel to the side wall when you hit the ball.
2. If the ball is always hitting the side wall first when you are trying to hit the ball straight then you are hitting it too late. Try to hit the ball a little earlier and keep your racquet behind the ball. Ensure that your feet and shoulders are parallel to the side wall when you hit the ball.
3. If the ball is always going straight when you are trying to hit the ball cross-court then you are hitting it too late. Try to hit the ball a little earlier and in just in front of your front foot. Ensure that your feet and shoulders are parallel to the side wall when you hit the ball.
4. Watch the ball. Keep your eye on the ball even when both your opponent and the ball are behind you.
5. Only go short when your opponent is standing well behind you.
