Gary's Squash Career

I started playing squash at the age of four and accompanied my father to the squash club whenever he played squash. At the age of ten I qualified for the Natal U14 team, three years later I made the South African U14 team and I was named captain.

When I was fourteen I started coaching and at sixteen I received my Level I coaching certificate. While at boarding school I helped out with the coaching of the school first team. In my last year as a U19 pupil I ended up as the number 1 in South Africa. After leaving school I went to work at a squash centre in Durban where my job included coaching, junior clinics, ladies mornings and the promotion of squash in the club. The following year I had to do my national service and was placed in charged of the squash department of the army. After completing my national service I concentrated on developing my squash coaching and game. I continued to coach at many schools and clubs. In 1993 I reached the semi-finals of the South African Closed and was ranked in the top eight in South Africa. In 1994 I qualified as a Level II squash coach and referee, I then qualified as an instructor and lectured a number of refereeing and Level I courses all over the country.

After doing extensive coaching in South Africa I moved to Bremen Germany where I coached the juniors and members of the club. After coaching for two years in Bremen I moved to Parsdorf where I was involved in junior coaching, team coaching, ladies team training and the training of the German junior players. I was also involved in the coaching and training of Sabine Schöne the ladies world number seven player. I was also playing in the tournaments around Germany and in my last major tournament in Germany I managed to beat the German number eight.

After working in Germany for 4 year I moved to Bermuda and became their  "Squash Professional" where I was involved in all aspects of coaching, restringing of rackets and general running of the club. We had over 200 children that were involved in the Junior Squash Program and the club had over 400 members.
I worked in Bermuda for 4 years and then moved back to South Africa where I continue coaching and playing squash. I enjoy coaching and the challenge of helping teams and individuals succeed in all events.
